Gomez, Spir Reach Quarterfinals of SIC Tennis

Athens, Ga. – Top-seeded Guillermo Gomez and 15th-seed Juan Spir each won two matches Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals in Division I singles at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Gomez, a senior from Alicante, Spain, captured a 6-0, 6-0 win over Miami’s Eduardo Pavia early in the day, then came back with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Jarryd Botha of Alabama, earning his 88th career victory at Georgia Tech in his quest to overtake his head coach, Kenny Thorne, who holds the Institute career mark of 112.

Meanwhile, Juan Spir, a sophomore from Medellin, Colombia, eased past Mississippi State’s Malte Stropp, 6-3, 6-1 in the afternoon and dispatched No. 7 seed Drake Bernstein of Georgia, 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the evening.

Gomez will face 16th seed Sadio Doumbia of Georgia Sunday afternoon, while Spir draws Vanderbilt’s Ryan Lipman, the nation’s 20th-ranked player and the third seed in the tournament, for his quarterfinal match.

Sophomore Kevin King, the fifth seed, got by Waylon Chin of Miami, 6-4, 6-2 early Saturday, but was eliminated by the Bulldogs’ Wil Spencer, 7-5, 7-6 (4) Saturday night. Tech’s other seeded player, senior Eliot Potvin, fell, 6-4, 6-4, to Kinshuk Sharma of UNC Wilmington in the round of 32.

Both of Tech’s seeded doubles teams – No. 1 Spir and King and No. 5 Potvin and Smith, advanced to Sunday’s quarterfinals in thrilling fashion Saturday night. Spir and King got by Robin Akser and Juan Ramirez of East Tennessee State, 9-7, while Potvin and Smith edged Hugo Klientivsky and Alex Das of Eastern Kentucky, 9-8 (5).

Ryan Smith and Dusan Miljevic advanced to the quarterfinals in Division II singles Saturday night. Smith earned a straight-set win (6-3, 6-3) over Gabriel Townes of Georgia State, then needed three sets to overcome Ricky Overspike of Alabama, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Miljevic downed Olivier Borsos of LSU, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 Saturday afternoon, then got a straight-set victory (6-3, 6-2) over Vanderbilt’s Charlie Jones.
