ATLANTA – For the second straight year, Georgia Tech junior tennis player Guillermo Gomez has been named to the 2010 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-America Team for Division I men’s tennis, released Monday in conjunction with the season-ending Campbell/ITA national singles and doubles rankings.
Gomez, from Alicante, Spain, was the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Singles Championship and reached the Round of 16 before falling to Bradley Klahn of Stanford. The three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference honoree finished the year with a 29-8 singles record, including a 16-6 mark against nationally-ranked opponents.
He finished the year No. 5 in the final ITA National Singles Rankings. Klahn was just ahead of him at No. 4. Tech’s final team ranking was No. 25.
Ten ACC student-athletes were named to the Men’s All-America team, including NCAA doubles champions Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz of Virginia. Duke’s Henrique Cunha, the ACC Player and Freshman of the Year, was also among the ACC contingent.
ACC Player of the Year Irina Falconi earned a spot on the Women’s All-America team. Three Miami players – including NCAA singles semifinalist Laura Vallverdu – were also honored.
A player must meet any of the following criteria to earn ITA All-America honors:
Singles
1.) Top 16 seed in NCAA Singles Championships, or;
2.) Reach round of 16 in NCAA Singles Championships, or;
3.) Finish in the Top 20 of the final ITA Rankings.
Doubles
1.) Top eight seed in NCAA Doubles Championships, or;
2.) Reach quarterfinals of NCAA Doubles Championship, or;
3.) Finish in Top 10 of final ITA Rankings
