Greensboro, N.C. – Georgia Tech senior Guillermo Gomez has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after defeating two top-40 opponents and moving to the top of the Yellow Jackets’ all-time singles victory chart.
Gomez, ranked 16th in the nation, extended his winning streak in singles to 11 matches and remained undefeated in ACC play this spring by defeating reigning ACC Co-Players of the Week Henrique Cunha (Duke) and Jose Hernandez (North Carolina) over the weekend.
Gomez lost the first set in each match, but rallied back to win, defeating the 6th-ranked and 2010 ACC Player of the Year Cunha by a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 score on Friday, and then outlasting the No. 38 Hernandez, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-6 (12-10) on Sunday.
The wins were the 112th and 113th of Gomez’s career, moving him past his head coach, Kenny Thorne, for the Georgia Tech career record. In doubles, he teamed with Dean O’Brien for wins in each weekend match, improving to 16-3 this spring and 7-2 in conference play at the No. 3 position.
Gomez, a native of Alicante, Spain, was named the ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season. He was also honored on March 8.
