Gomez Named ACC Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year

June 23, 2011

Greensboro, N.C. – Georgia Tech senior Guillermo Gomez has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s 2011 All-ACC Academic Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

Gomez, the 2011 ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and an ITA All-American, graduated as the winningest singles player in Georgia Tech history with 119 victories – surpassing the old mark of 112 wins held by current Yellow Jackets coach Kenny Thorne. The industrial engineering major from Alicante, Spain, earned All-ACC honors for the fourth straight season after posting a 21-3 record in dual singles matches in 2011, with all but two of the matches coming on the No. 1 court. He finished with a 10-1 record in ACC regular-season play and reached the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championships. Gomez also teamed with Dean O’Brien for a 19-4 record in doubles, mostly at No. 3.

Academically, Gomez is a four-time member of the All-ACC Academic Team and was named to the 2011 CoSIDA Academic District III Team. He was named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll in 2008, 2009 and 2010 (with 2011 still pending).

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters. Gomez is the third Tech student-athlete this spring to be named ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his or her sport. Golf junior James White was so honored on Tuesday, and softball senior Christy Jones was announced last week. The 2011 All-ACC Academic Men’s Tennis Team features four student athletes who also earned All-America honors this season – Florida State’s Vahid Mirzadeh and Connor Smith, and Georgia Tech’s Gomez and Kevin King.

The All-ACC Academic Team also includes six student-athletes who were also All-ACC selections and nine that have earned All-ACC Academic honors on at least one previous occasion. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during his academic career. 2011 All-ACC Academic Men’s Tennis Team
