Gomez Named ACC Freshman of the Year

April 17, 2008

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech freshman Guillermo Gomez was named the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, announced the league office Thursday. Gomez was also one of 19 athletes named to the All-ACC Men’s Tennis Team.

“Guillermo is very well deserving of the Rookie of the Year honors,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “He was put in a tough position playing No. 1 singles as a freshman and he handled it extremely well. He played great all season and hopefully he’ll get invited to play in the NCAA tournament.”

The native from Alicante, Spain, became the first Yellow Jacket to garner the league’s top rookie accolade since Roger Anderson was tabbed the 2000 ACC Rookie of the Year. Gomez registered identical 7-4 ledgers in both singles and doubles action during league play in 2008. His 27 overall singles victories place him ninth all-time in Georgia Tech history.

Virginia grabbed two of the three individual awards and three schools placed a trio of honorees on the 19-member All-ACC Men’s Tennis Team. Virginia’s Somdev Devvarman was the unanimous choice for ACC Player of the Year. The senior sensation has been instrumental for the Cavaliers, who recorded three undefeated seasons (2005, 2007-08) in league play during his career at Virginia. The native from Chennai, India, has been the nation’s No. 1 singles and doubles player in every ranking this season, finishing with a perfect 11-0 mark and a 10-1 doubles record in conference action. Devvarman became only the second Cavalier to earn the league’s top honor and the first since 2001.

Receiving his second career league recognition, Virginia’s Brian Boland was tabbed ACC Coach of the Year. He led the Cavaliers to their second-straight ACC regular-season title and fifth overall, as they compiled a perfect 11-0 record in conference action for the second year in a row. Boland and his top-seeded Cavaliers will look to capture a fourth league crown at this week’s Championship.
