CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez fell in three sets to No. 9 seed Dominic Inglot of Virginia on Sunday morning in the quarterfinals of the ITA Wilson Mideast Region Championships on the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club on Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.
Gomez, a freshman from Alicante, Spain, played very well but ultimately fell to Inglot, 7-5, 6-7, 7-5. After dropping the first set, Gomez stormed back, breaking Inglot early in the second set. Inglot would eventually break back and send the match into a second set tiebreaker. Gomez served well and picked up the win to tie the match at one.
In the third set, Gomez would once again break Inglot to take a 5-4 lead. Serving for the victory, Gomez fell behind 0-40 and eventually allowed Inglot to tie the set a 5-5. Gomez was unable to battle back and dropped the final set 7-5.
“Guillermo played a very good match today,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “I could not be more proud of him. He played very well this whole tournament. This has been very good for him mentally and physically. It was great that he was able to jump right in and make a statement as a freshman.”
The Jackets will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 26 when they close out their fall season at the Alabama Fall Tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
