ATLANTA –
Guillermo Gomez won two matches Saturday to advance to Sunday’s Division I quarterfinals, and he teamed up with freshman Kevin King to move into the Division I doubles quarterfinals Saturday at the Southern Intercollegiate Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis complex in Athens, Ga.
Gomez, a sophomore from Alicante, Spain, who is seeded fifth in the Division I singles, won both of his matches in straight sets Saturday, dispatching Charles Bottoni of East Tennessee State, 6-1, 7-6, in the morning, then defeating Nicolas Delgado DeRobles of Virginia Tech, 6-2, 6-1, in the afternoon.
Gomez, the 2008 ACC Freshman of the Year who has not lost a set in three matches this weekend, is set to face Georgia’s Jamie Hunt in a semifinal match at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Henry Field Stadium.
Meanwhile, Gomez and King downed Georgia’s Josh Varela and Drake Bernstein, 8-6, in doubles Saturday and will face a duo from Kentucky in Sunday’s quarterfinals.
In other doubles play, Eliot Potvin teamed with Roebuck to capture a pair of doubles matches and advance to the Division II quarterfinals. They defeated Ricky Cuellar and Chris Huynh of Charlotte, 8-4, Friday morning before knocking off Sheharyan Wali and Henrik Willers of Lander College in the afternoon.
“Guillermo played very well today and beat two very tough players,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “Kevin and Guillermo also did well to win their doubles match. Austin and Eliot won their doubles match, but again some things needed to be addressed and were addressed,”
In other singles action Saturday, King and sophomore Ryan Smith both lost in the Division I round of 32 singles bracket, King to John Peers of Middle Tennessee State (1-6, 6-2, 6-2) and Smith to Enrique Oliveras of East Tennessee State (6-1, 6-3). Sophomores Doug Kenny and Miguel Muguruza fell in Division II round of 32 matches. Kenny lost in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) to Terek Ben Soltane of Central Florida, while Muguruza battled to a three-set loss (5-7, 7-5, 6-4) against ETSU’s Sander Gille.
Freshman Dusan Miljevic defeated Jason Wolfson of Morehead State in straight sets (7-5, 6-2) before falling in the round of 16 to MTSU’s Richard Cowden in Division II, while junior Austin Roebuck dropped a DII round of 32 match to Justin Pickham of Georgia College (4-6, 6-3, 6-3).
Potvin advanced through the Division I consolation bracket when Chris Shafik of Morehead State retired with an injury after Potvin opened a 4-1 lead.
