ATLANTA – On the heels of his record-setting performance in leading Georgia Tech over Clemson, Yellow Jacket quarterback George Godsey was named Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Back of the Week.
Godsey, a junior from Tampa, Fla., turned in the most prolific passing performance in school history, including the game-winning touchdown pass with just seven seconds left, to lead the Yellow Jackets to the 31-28 victory over the fourth-ranked Tigers. Godsey threw three touchdown passes, two of them in the final seven minutes, and set school records with 454 yards passing and 35 completions. He did not throw an interception on 57 attempts.
With Tech trailing 21-16 in the fourth quarter, Godsey guided the Yellow Jackets 80 yards on nine plays, capped by a 48-yard touchdown pass to Kelly Campbell. He then hit Jonathan Smith for the two-point conversion to give Tech a 24-21 lead with 6:35 left.
After Clemson regained the lead with a touchdown, the Jackets took over at their own 20 with 1:52 to play. Godsey engineered another 80-yard drive on 11 plays, hitting Kerry Watkins from 16 yards out for the game-winner with seven seconds left. On the winning drive, Godsey completed seven of 11 passes for 73 yards. He also threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Watkins in the first half.
Tech freshman linebacker Daryl Smith is the ACC Rookie of the Week. The Albany, Ga., native had a team-high 10 tackles, a pass breakup and a key fumble recovery. Smith recovered a Clemson fumble at the Tigers’ 41-yard-line, leading to a Tech field goal. He helped the Tech defense hold the Tigers to 354 yards of total offense, 138 yards below their average.
