Georgia Tech's Mahoney, Swarn Advance at U.S. Track Nationals; Reyes Places Ninth in Long Jump

STANFORD, Calif. – The Georgia Tech track and field program enjoyed a solid first day at the USA Track and Field National Championships, as men’s standouts Brendon Mahoney and Bryan Swarn each advanced to the semifinals of their respective events and Mishanta Reyes placed ninth in the long jump Friday at Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Mahoney clocked a time of 1:49.18 to place 12th in the first round of the 800 meters. He placed sixth in the ultra-competitive second heat and advanced to the semifinals of the event, which are slated for Saturday at 7:50 p.m. ET.

Swarn finished 10th in the opening round of the 400 meters with a time of 46.07. He was third in the second heat, finishing just behind former Tech great and Olympic gold medalist Angelo Taylor. Swarn moves on to Saturday’s semifinals, which are slated to run at 9 p.m. ET.

Reyes, who had the top finish of the day for Tech, recorded a leap of 19’06.00″ to place ninth.

All-ACC sprinter Amandi Rhett reached the semifinals of the 100 meters with a time of 11.83, which was good for 11th place in the first round. She improved her time to 11.62 in the semis but failed to advance to the finals of the event, as the top eight moved on. Chryste Gaines and Marion Jones were the top qualifiers for Saturday’s final.

Dana Rogers was the lone Tech competitor in the USA Junior Championships, as she placed 10th in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.41. The top nine advanced to Saturday’s final.

The meet continues Saturday, with Mahoney and Swarn competing in the semifinals of the 800 and 400 meters, respectively. Nicole Campbell will race in the women’s 800 meters semis at 7:35 p.m. ET, while Chris Sinotte will go in the javelin at 6:30 p.m. ET.
