ATLANTA – Georgia Tech senior Jillian O’Neill will face Tennessee’s Brynn Boren in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship at 10 a.m. ET Wednesday, May 23. O’Neill and doubles teammate Alex Anghelescu will take on UCLA’s pair of Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton when the NCAA Doubles Championships begin on Thursday.
Both matches will be played at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus in Athens, Ga. Play will continue each day until the championship matches in both tournaments on Monday, May 28.
O’Neill, ranked No. 11 in the latest Campbell’s/ITA College Tennis Rankings, is 30-13 this season with 12 wins over ranked opponents this spring. The Montreal, Quebec, native was selected to the All-ACC Women’s Tennis Team and is seeded 9-16 for the NCAA Championships.
This will mark the second straight year O’Neill has competed in the singles championship after joining Georgia Tech from Hillsborough Community College prior to her junior season. During her two years on the Flats, O’Neill has amassed 54 wins and 23 wins over ranked opponents during the two spring seasons.
Boren, a sophomore from Laguna Niguel, Calif., is ranked No. 32 and owns a 24-12 mark on the season. She has played from the top three positions this season for the Lady Vols and has seven wins over ranked opponents.
Wednesday’s winner between O’Neill and Boren will face the winner of North Carolina’s 39th-ranked Lauren McHale and Baylor’s 23rd-ranked Nina Secerbegovico in the second round Thursday.
O’Neill and Anghelescu began playing together to begin the 2012 spring season and have risen to No. 23 in the latest rankings. The duo is 14-12 on the season and has eight wins over ranked foes, including an 8-5 win over Georgia’s then-No. 2 ranked team of Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist in the Yellow Jackets’ dual opener January 21 in Atlanta.
Anderson and Morton are ranked No. 6 and own a 23-8 mark in doubles play this season, including nine wins over ranked opponents. The pair has played mostly from the No. 1 position for the Bruins and has helped lead UCLA to the team national title match.
The winner will play the winner of Pepperdine’s 32nd-ranked pair of Khunpak Issara and Lorraine Guillermo and Texas A&M’s 29th-ranked Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Sue Wen in the round of 16 Friday.
