ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will begin its 2001-02 season on Friday, when it travels to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete at the Tennessee Fall Invitational. The three-day tournament will take place at the Tennessee Tennis Complex, on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
Heading up the Yellow Jacket returnees in the field this weekend will be junior Jaime Wong, who enters the 2002 season ranked in the nation’s top-100 singles players by the recently released ITA preseason poll. Wong, who earned All-ACC selections for the second time in 2001, posted a school-record-tying 30 wins last season as a sophomore. Joining her will be senior Laura Ozolins, who had an outstanding 2001 season, winning the ACC Flight 6 singles title, and earning Academic All-America District III honors for her efforts in the classroom and on the court.
Two other members of the junior class will join Wong and Ozolins as the anchors for the Yellow Jackets, including Mysti Morris and Mason Miller. Morris will look to return to the form of her rookie season after battling through injuries for much of the 2001 campaign. Miller turned in a solid performance a year ago after recovering from shoulder surgery in 2000.
A pair of sophomores also returns for 2002 in Fallon Koon and Kristen Roberson. Roberson had a strong rookie season as she posted the third-most singles wins a year ago, finishing with a 17-7 record, including an 8-4 mark in dual matches. Koon finished the year with a 6-3 overall record, playing in the No. 6 singles spot for Tech during the dual match season.
Tech’s lone newcomer for the year, freshman Catherine Gunn, will be looking at her first action for the Yellow Jackets this weekend.
Both singles and doubles play will get under way on Friday, with play in both the championship and consolation brackets continuing throughout the weekend. Georgia Tech’s daily results will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com, with full tournament results available at www.utladyvols.com .
