Georgia Tech Women's Tennis Rebounds On Day Two of St. Mary's Health Systems Classic

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team was able to find its footing and turned in an outstanding day at the St. Mary’s Health System Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., losing only one of six matches on the day, with three players reaching Sunday’s consolation finals in singles play. The three-day tournament is being held at the University of Tennessee Tennis Center.

The first Yellow Jacket to book a spot in a consolation final tomorrow was junior Jaime Wong, who opened the day with a three-set win over Carole Soubis of Mississippi State by scores of 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Wong will face Amy Thomas of Minnesota in the Flight Two consolation final. The Flight Three consolation final will also feature a Georgia Tech player, as freshman Catherine Gunn got her first win as a Yellow Jacket singles player when she defeated Jennifer Jassawalla of NC State in straight sets on Saturday afternoon by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Gunn will be matched up against Michaela Havelkova in the consolation final tomorrow.

The third Jacket to reach a consolation final in the event was sophomore Kristen Roberson, who bounced back from a three-set loss in the opening round, to down Krista Thomson of Furman in straight sets by a 6-4, 7-6 (4) count. Roberson will face Lynsey Perry in the Flight Five consolation final tomorrow. The final Yellow Jacket in the field is senior Laura Ozolins, who lost in her consolation match Saturday morning, falling to Kristin Nicholls of NC State by a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 4-6 score. Ozolins will face Laura Bugarello in the Flight Four seventh-place match.

In doubles action, Tech’s team of Ozolins and Gunn finished third in Flight Three, as they defeated Ueda and Switala of Mississippi State by an 8-3 score in the third-place match. The Jackets’ other doubles tandem of Wong and Roberson got their first win of the season with a 8-4 decision over The and Kovarik of Furman in the seventh-place match of Flight Two.
