Georgia Tech Women's Tennis Opens Play at St. Mary's Health Systems Classic

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team opened its 2002 season by competing in the first round of the St. Mary’s Health System Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., on Friday. The three-day event is being contested at the University of Tennessee Tennis Center.

The Yellow Jacket singles players found the going tough on the first day of play, as no Tech players were able to capture a match win in the first round, while playing in a strong field of competitors. Sophomore Kristen Roberson came the closest to capturing her first-round match, as she extended Katrina Gildemeister of NC State to three sets before falling by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 2-6. Roberson will now face Krista Thomson of Furman in the consolation bracket at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Senior Laura Ozolins played Crystal Cleveland of Tennessee close for two sets before dropping a 4-6, 4-6 decision. Ozolins will now face Kristin Nicholls of NC State in the consolation bracket at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. Yellow Jacket junior Jaime Wong found the going difficult against Kate Pinchbeck of North Carolina as she dropped a 2-6, 2-6 match. Pinchbeck is currently ranked No. 36 by the ITA Preseason poll. Wong will face Carole Soubis of Mississippi State at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.

The final member of the Tech contingent in the field is freshman Catherine Gunn, who dropped her first match as a Yellow Jacket by a 0-6, 2-6 count to Amy Walgenbach of Purdue. Gunn will play Jennifer Jassawalla of NC State tomorrow morning in the consolation round.

The Yellow Jackets recorded theiir first win of the day in doubles, as the team of Ozolins and gunn defeated Trefthen and Buckley of Kentucky by a score of 8-4, before dropping a second-round match to Thomson and Hagood of Furman (6-8). The duo will face Ueda and Switala of Mississippi State in the third-place match on Saturday. Tech’s other doubles tandem of Wong and Roberson dropped a first round match to Mejia and Mojzis of North Carolina by a 5-8 score, and then fell to Thomas and Watts of Minnesota in the consolation bracket by a 8-9 (3) score.
