Georgia Tech Women's Cross Country Captures NCAA South Regional Title; Yellow Jacket Men Place Fourth

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Led by sophomore Renee Metivier’s individual victory, the Georgia Tech women’s cross country team won its first NCAA South Regional title Saturday at the University of Alabama’s Harry Pritchett Golf Course. With the win the Yellow Jackets earn their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships. The Tech men’s team placed fourth to earn its best-ever finish at the regional meet.

Metivier cruised to the individual title, covering the six-kilometer course in a season-best time of 20:20.39. She defeated runner-up Jenn Feenstra of Georgia State by almost 35 seconds. Metivier, who earned all-region honors for the second consecutive season, is the first Tech runner to capture an individual regional title.

Joining Metivier on the all-region team are senior Nicole Campbell, who placed seventh in a time of 21:30.51, sophomore Katie Griffin, who finished 13th, senior Sara Pardue, who placed 16th, and senior Amy Edwards who finished 17th. The Jackets scored only 54 points, outdistancing South Florida, which was second with 102 points.

On the men’s side, Tech had four runners earn all-region honors, led by senior Joey Zins, who placed 12th in a time of 31:38.62 in the 10K event. He was followed by a pack of three Yellow Jackets. Sophomore Kyle Rabbitt, senior Phillip Gable and sophomore Neil McDonagh finished 16th, 17th and 18th, respectively. Tech posted 90 points, finishing behind Alabama, Tennessee and Florida State.

The individual winner on the men’s side was Alabama’s David Kimani, who clocked a time of 30:06.43.

The women’s squad now moves on to the NCAA Championships, slated for Monday, November 19, at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
