Georgia Tech Women's Basketball Downs Virgin Islands All-Stars to Open Exhibition Schedule

Box Score

ATLANTA — The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team had four players score in double figures, led by Milli Martinez with 17, as it opened its 2001-02 exhibition schedule with an 80-58 win over the University of the Virgin Islands All-Stars on Friday night at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

The Yellow Jackets opened the game with a 14-4 run sparked by eight points from junior guard Nina B?rlin and never looked back as they later extended the lead to 35-13 before setting for a 44-23 halftime advantage. Martinez led all scorers in the first period as she finished with 12 points at the intermission to go along with B?rlin’s 10 and another eight from senior Regina Tate, who returned to the lineup after missing last season with a leg injury.

In the second half, the Virgin Islands All-Stars got things going and kept the scoring nearly even in the period, as Natasha Lettsome scored all 15 of her points in the second half to lead the team. Tech still held the scoring advantage in the period, outscoring UVI 36-35. Yellow Jacket sophomore Megan Isom netted 11 of her 14 points in the half, including three three-pointers to lead Tech.

For the game, Tech shot a solid 42 percent from the floor, while the Virgin Islands All-Stars finished at 39.7 percent. The difference in the contest came on the boards, as the Jackets finished with a 61-25 edge in rebounding, led by Martinez’ nine.

Martinez finished with three assists to go along with her 17 points and nine rebounds, while B?rlin had a game-high eight assists to go along with 10 points and six rebounds. Tate was the Jackets final double-digit scorer, finishing with 12 points and six boards.

The UVI All-Stars had two other players joining Lettsome in double figures, including Kristeena Alexander with 14 and Tombi Bell with 16.

Georgia Tech will conclude its exhibition slate on November 10, when it plays host to SE Pro-Am at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum beginning at 2 p.m. Complete box score and game information available at www.ramblinwreck.com.
