Georgia Tech Volleyball Travels to Athens to Face Georgia

Nov. 22, 2004

After losing their first match in over two months, the Georgia Tech volleyball team (23-6) travels to Athens to face arch-rival Georgia (18-10) Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Ramsey Student Center.

“It is going to be very tough for us to rebound after our disappointing match last week, but we are going to have to regroup and refocus our energies in our practice today,” said head coach Bond Shymansky. “Georgia is a very hot team right now and lost a very tough match to Florida last weekend, and they are going to be a challenge for us. At the same time, our team identifies how important it is to our school to beat Georgia and it’s not going to be hard to get them motivated to play well.”

Tech has won the last five meetings, including a 3-0 victory last season in Atlanta. The match marks the seventh consecutive year the two teams have met, and the 26th time overall, with Georgia holding the all-time series edge, 20-5. The match will be broadcast live on WREK radio (91.1 FM) and will be available in streaming audio over the internet at www.wrek.org and livestats will also be provided at www.ramblinwreck.com.

The Jackets are led this season by a slew of players including Lynnette Moster, this year’s Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, Jayme Gergen, who earned first team all-ACC honors and is ranked ninth in the nation in hitting percentage (.403), Lindsey Laband, who leads the nation in assists per game (15.14) and earned second team all-ACC honors, and Lauren Sauer, who earned second team all-ACC honors and is second on the team with 418 kills.

“There’s no question that Georgia vs. Georgia Tech is the biggest rival between the two schools and we do everything that we can to make sure that they are on our schedule every year,” said Shymansky. “We have a lot of great volleyball fans at Georgia Tech, but what a Georgia match will bring out are Georgia Tech fans that won’t know a lot about volleyball, but they know they want to see the Yellow Jackets take on the Bulldogs. I think it is going to be a great match and our team is looking forward to it.”
