Georgia Tech Volleyball Inks Erin Birmingham for 2006 Season

Nov. 14, 2005

Erin Birmingham (Kansas City, MO), a 6-1 middle hitter signed a national letter of intent to attend Georgia Tech, head volleyball coach Bond Shymansky announced Monday.

A Prepvolleyball all-American in 2004, Birmingham has been listed by prepvolleyball.com as the No. 79 prospect on the Senior Aces List and earlier this year was named as a “Top 50” recruit by the same organization.

“Erin is one of the fastest and most dynamic middles we have ever signed,” said head coach Bond Shymansky. “Her footspeed and lightning fast arm swing are a perfect fit for our fast offensive style and she has an explosive jumping ability which will make her a tremendous blocker on our team.”

An All State selection in 2004, Birmingham helped lead Park View South High School to a 35-4-1 record and a third place finish at the state tournament earlier this month. During her four years on the varsity team, she has earned all-Conference and All-Distrcit honors on seven occassions and last week received the Evelyn Gates Award given to the outstanding volleyball player in the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area.

An excellent student, Birmingham carries a 4.0 GPA and is currently ranked first in her senior class of 389 and was named as the state finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

A member of the MAV 18-1 Club Volleyball team, Birmingham was an all-tournament selection in the American Division at the 2005 Junior Nationals and chose Georgia Tech over San Diego, Minnesota and Missouri.

“We are excited to Erin join our team,” said Shymansky. “She has an excellent work ethic that will ensure she will be an impact player on our team. With all of her impressive accomplishments on the court, she actually stands out more in the classroom. She is a straight “A” student and has the ideal academic profile for Georgia Tech.”
