ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships, April 20-22, hosted by Wake Forest University.
“We are excited to be heading to Winston-Salem for the 2006 outdoor ACC Championships,” said Tech men’s coach Grover Hinsdale. “This young team is growing up and we look forward to, what we know will be, a challenging competition.”
The Yellow Jacket women finished fifth at the ACC Indoor Championships, while the men posted an eighth-place finish.
Seeking to defend outdoor ACC titles for Tech will be Fatmata Fofanah, Ashlee Kidd and Andriane Lapsley.
Fofanah, a junior from Bronx, N.Y., won the women’s 100-meter high hurdles last season and holds the league’s third-fastest time at 13.60. She is behind teammate sophomore Shantia Moss who ran a time of 13.44 and Miami’s Dominique Darden (13.37).
Kidd, a junior from St. Petersburg, Fla., won ACC Indoor MVP honors after breaking meet records in the 200- and 400-meter dash events. Kidd was injured at the end of the 200m dash and is still trying to recover. She ran a leg of the outdoor champion 4×100-meter relay team last season. She ranks second in the 400m with a time of 53.82, behind UM’s Charlette Greggs.
Lapsley, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, also ran a leg of the 4x100m relay championship team last season and won the 100-meter dash as well. She captured her second indoor 60m title this year and holds the ACC’s top time this year at 11.37. She ranks second in the 200m with a time of 23.23, behind UM’s Greggs at 23.21.
On the men’s side, sophomore Jerome Miller finished third in the high jump a season ago and holds the conference’s top mark this year at 7 feet, ¼ inch. Miller followed closely by freshman teammate Juan Cave who ranks second with a mark of 6 feet, 10 ¾ inches.
Senior Nico Shaner and redshirt freshman Andy Powlen also rank in the top four for the Jackets this outdoor season. Shaner stands third in the men’s javelin with a personal-best mark of 206 feet, 11 inches. Powlen ranks fourth in the men’s shot put with a throw of 58 feet, 7 inches.
Senior Brandy Depland finished second in the women’s triple jump at the indoor meet and stands third with a mark of 43 feet, 5 ¾ inches, for the outdoor season.
