CLEMSON, S.C. – Perron Jones and Aaron Unterberger finished first in their events as the Georgia Tech track and field team opened its 2012-13 indoor season on Saturday at the Orange & Purple Winter Classic.
Jones took first in the 60-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 6.84 and improved that in the finals, winning with a time of 6.81.
Unterberger pole vaulted to first place at a height of 16’¾, followed by newcomer Nathan Daniel who placed second with a 14’7¼ leap.
On the men’s side, freshman Spencer Allen raced in his first collegiate event final, placing third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.32.
Tech claimed four of the top five spots in the 3,000 meters as Wyatt Gouldthorpe raced to a time of 8:58.55 to take second, followed consecutively by teammates Billy Koskiewicz (9:04.96), Niall Longobardi (9:09.60) and Drew Vander Wood (9:16.18).
Mykhail Chamber also listed a top-three finish in his event with a high jump of 6’8¾ to place third. Newcomer Julia Frederick tied for third in the women’s high jump with a leap of 5’1.
Also for the women, Julienne McKee recorded a long jump of 18’7¾ to take second place and Samantha Becker logged a third-place finish in the pole vault (10’ 11¾).
Freshman Donjhae Jones finished in the top three of her five pentathlon events for 3185 points, including the 60-meter hurdles (9.08), high jump (4’11¾) and long jump (18’5).
The Yellow Jackets continue the indoor season on Jan. 12 at the Crimson Tide Indoor Opener in Birmingham, Ala.
