Georgia Tech to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of 1990 National Champs

July 30, 2015

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech Athletics will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1990 National Championship football season this fall, culminating with a 1990 Championship Celebration during the Nov. 12 game vs. Virginia Tech.

Throughout the 2015 season, members of the 1990 team as well as memorable moments from that historic season will be featured during gameday promotions, on Georgia Tech’s social media platforms, and www.ramblinwreck.com.

On Nov. 12, members of the 1990 team lead the football team down Yellow Jacket Alley two hours prior to kickoff of the nationally televised Thursday night game against Virginia Tech. The 1990 team will also be honored with an on-field recognition at halftime.

The 1990 season began with five straight wins, including victories over NC State, Chattanooga, and No. 25 South Carolina. The win over South Carolina catapulted the Yellow Jackets into the Top 25 for the first time in 1990. Two weeks later, the Jackets knocked off No. 15 Clemson to improve to 5-0. Georgia Tech’s 13-13 tie at North Carolina in its sixth game was the only blemish on the Yellow Jackets’ undefeated season.

Following a Homecoming win over Duke, the Jackets and No. 1 Virginia faced off in one of the greatest games in ACC and Georgia Tech history. Georgia Tech moved into the national championship conversation when Scott Sisson’s field goal with seven seconds remaining gave the Yellow Jackets a memorable 41-38 win over the Cavaliers. Tech closed the regular season by winning on the road against rival Georgia, 41-23, setting the stage for a 45-21 win over No. 13 Nebraska in the Citrus Bowl. The following day, the Jackets were voted No. 1 in the UPI Coaches Poll and earned their fourth national title.

Coached by Bobby Ross, Georgia Tech’s 1990 football team featured 10 All-ACC selections and a pair of All-Americans, Marco Coleman and Ken Swilling. Georgia Tech’s coaching staff also included future head coaches Ralph Friedgen and George O’Leary.
