THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team finished out its eight-match homestand in the month of March with a dominating 4-0 over the Maryland Terrapins Sunday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta.
It was the third straight win for the Yellow Jackets, who went 6-2 in March. The win improves the Jackets to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the ACC while Maryland falls to 5-10 and 0-5 in the league.
“Any time you can get a win in the ACC you’re really happy. It was a good weekend for us,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. Today, we came out with better energy in doubles and we were able to carry that into singles. We were able to win 4-0 and I was very happy we were able to do that.
“Today, I felt like we came out and played very well in doubles,” Harmon added. “We moved our feet, we competed well and we did the things we’re supposed to do. In singles, we were able to continue that. The players that have been playing well all year for us continued and did a good job. We’re happy to get two wins in the ACC before a couple days off before we go to play North Carolina and Duke.”
The Yellow Jackets were in control from the start. Tech’s freshman pair of Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey cruised to an 8-1 win over Maryland’s Vroni Van Berlo and Sarah Gealer on court one. Woodard and Kurey, ranked No. 67, improved to 17-5 overall this season, 13-2 in doubles matches and 4-1 in the ACC.
Tech clinched the doubles point when senior Elizabeth Kilborn and junior Muriel Wacker downed the Terps’ side of Olga Bredikhina and Nataliya Bredikhina 8-2 on court two. Jasmine Minor and Natasha Prokhnevska were leading Maryland’s team of Olga Gaistruk and Gabriela Srodowski 7-5 on court three when the doubles point was clinched.
As rain moved into the Flats, singles play moved into the Bill Moore Indoor Tennis Center where the Jackets picked right up in impressive fashion.
Woodard won her third straight singles match and her 17th of the year with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Maryland’s Sarah Gealer on court two. Kurey rebounded from a tough loss against BC to claim her fourth win in the last five matches with a 6-1, 6-2 win over the Terps’ Olga Gaistruk on court four.
Wacker won her fourth straight match as the Zurich, Switzerland, native bested Maryland’s Nataliya Bredikhina, 6-1, 6-2, on court five to clinch the Yellow Jacket victory.
Prokhnevska led Maryland’s Olga Bredikhina 6-0, 4-3. Minor won her first set 7-6 over Gabriela Srodowski but the Terp freshman led 1-0 in the second. Kilborn was locked in a marathon first set with Maryland senior Vroni Van Berlo. The Yellow Jacket captain led the first set tiebreak 10-9 when the match was suspended.
Georgia Tech will now make arguably the toughest road trip of the ACC season when the Yellow Jackets travel to the Old North State. Tech will take on No. 1 North Carolina April 5 at 1 p.m. in Chapel Hill and No. 7 Duke April 6 at 12 p.m. in Durham.
