RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 19) — Georgia Tech downed Eastern Kentucky 11-1 in five innings Saturday night to advance to the semifinals of the silver bracket of the 2000 Carolina Triangle Classic at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
Tech, 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the tournament, will face Akron Sunday at Noon. The Yellow Jackets finished second in its pool with a 2-1 record after defeating Elon, 6-3, and Wright State, 3-2, and falling to Minnesota, 2-0.
The Jackets pounded out 12 hits en route to downing EKU as first baseman Beth Warren went 3-for-4 with three RBI and left fielder Heather Sumrow went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI. Freshman Tiffany Goodman moved to 2-1 on the season after allowing just one hit and one unearned run in five innings.
Tech lost to Minnesota, 2-0, after Gopher pitcher Angie Recknor held the Jackets to four hits. Jacket pitcher Jamie Frost surrendered just five hits and two unearned runs, which were scored after two Tech errors in the second inning. Right fielder Kori Jacobson went 2-for-2 at the plate for Tech.
Senior catcher Anne Knobbe led Tech past Wright State, 3-2, after blasting a solo home run on a 3-1 count to lead off the sixth inning. The round tripper was her 25th career home run. Sumrow went 2-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI, which tied the game at two apiece in the second inning.
Tech opened the tournament by downing Elon, 6-3, as Knobbe, an all-ACC honoree in ’99, went 4-for-4 with three RBI. She delivered a two-run home run in the second inning, and second baseman Ellen Styer and first baseman Beth Warren each contributed solo home runs to push Tech ahead.
