Georgia Tech Men's Tennis Has Strong Showing to Open Play at ITA Regionals

ATLANTA — The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team recorded a strong start to open play at the ITA Regionals in Chapel Hill, N.C. The four-day event is being contested at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

For the Yellow Jackets in singles play, sophomore Scott Schnugg opened the tournament in strong fashion on Thursday, reaching the quarterfinals of the Qualifying Singles Draw with three wins. In the first round, Schnugg recorded a straight-set win over Partik Binkowski of Old Dominion by a 6-3, 6-2 score. He then followed that with a three-set win in the round of 32 over North Carolina’s Andy Metzler, by a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 count. Schnugg once again recorded a straight-set decision over Wake Forests Justin Kaufmann, with a 7-5, 6-4 score. He will now face Joakim Peterson of Charlotte in Friday’s quarters.

In the other half of the qualifying singles bracket, Tech sophomore West Nott won his opening match but was unable to advance beyond the second round. Nott downed William & Mary’s Jay Davis by a 6-3, 6-1 score in round one, before falling to Darin Goldstein by a 7-5, 6-3 score in round two.

During competition in the doubles main draw bracket, the Yellow Jackets’ top duo of David Wright and Roger Anderson got rollin on the opening day, winning a pair of matches to reach the quarterfinals. Wright and Anderson downed Florida State’s Alex Herrera and Jarrod Owen in the first round by an 8-5 score, and then defeated North Carolina’s Geoff Boyd and Nicholas Monroe in the second round by an 8-6 count. The duo will face Wake Forest’s Trent Brendon and David Lowenthal in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Tech’s other doubles team of Nott and Schnugg won their first match of the qualifying draw over Zalan Kiss and Soufien Rechag of Charleston Southern by an 8-2 score, but were unable to get by Rodrigo Laub and Xavier Luscan of Florida State, falling by an 8-5 score.
