Georgia Tech Men's Tennis Falls to No. 21 Florida State, 5-2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis fell to Atlantic Coast Conference rival Florida State by a score of 5-2 on Sunday at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla. With the loss, the No. 34 Yellow Jackets fall to 11-8 (3-5 ACC) on the season while the No. 21 Seminoles improve to 15-6 overall with a 6-2 ACC record.

Georgia Tech was able to score only two points on the day as Jose Luis Muguruza and George Gvelesiani recorded wins for the Jackets.

Tech started the day by failing to claim the doubles point. Zachary Rath and Scott Blackmon dropped an 8-3 decision at the No. 3 doubles position to start things off. The Yellow Jackets No. 1 doubles team of David North and Marko Rajevac tied the score winning an 8-4 match against the No. 34 ranked tandem of Mat Cloer and Ytai Abougzir. The final doubles match saw Muguruza and Sukhwa Young falling in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7).

In singles action, 24th ranked Muguruza defeated 32nd ranked Cloer in the No. 1 single position. With the overall match already secure, Muguruza downed Cloer 1-0 (7) in a third set tiebreaker. Gvelesiani was the Jackets only other singles win as he downed FSU’s Chip Webb, 7-6 (6), 2-6, 1-0 (4).

In other singles action, Rath fell in three sets at the No. 4 position, while North, Rajevac and Jordan Delass all fell in two sets.

Georgia Tech will return to action Friday, April 15, when the Jackets will play host to NC State at 2:30 p.m. Tech will conclude the regular season on Sunday, April 17 as the men’s and women’s tennis teams with play a doubleheader against North Carolina. The women’s match begins at 11 a.m. with the men’s match immediately following.
