Georgia Tech Men's Tennis Falls to No. 2 Virginia, 6-1

Despite an upset win from No. 20 Jose Muguruza over No. 8 Doug Stewart, the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team fell to No. 2 Virgina Sunday, 6-1. The Yellow Jackets have now dropped three straight matches, falling to 7-6 on the season, 1-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play while the Cavaliers improve to 14-2 and 2-0 in ACC action.

The Yellow Jackets opened the match dropping the doubles point and losing all three matches. The team of Scott Blackmon and Zachary Rath fell at No. 3 doubles to Darrin Cohen and Doug Stewart, 8-3. The Cavaliers then captured the point with a win at No. 2 doubles as No. 44 Somdev Devvarman and Trent Huey defeated Muguruza and Sukhwa Young, 8-4. In the finals doubles match of the day, No. 29 Rylan Rizza and Nick Meythaler combined to beat Marko Rajevac and David North, 8-5.

Virginia carried its momentum into singles play, winning five of six matches. The Jackets lone victory came at No. 1 as Muguruza held on to upset Stewart, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, David North lost a tough three set match to No. 38 Rizza, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (6) while at No. 3 singles Rajevac dropped a three set match to No. 15 Devvarmna, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-2. In the final three matches, Rath fell to Huey in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, Jordan Delass lost to No. 96 Marko Miklo, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 and George Gvelesiani fell to No. 40 Cohen, 6-2, 6-2.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. ET when they face Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.
