Despite three wins in the singles lineup, the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team fell to Virginia Tech Friday, 4-3. The Yellow Jackets fall to 7-5 on the season, 1-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play while the Hokies improve to 9-4 and 3-1 in ACC action.
The Yellow Jackets opened the match dropping the doubles point. The team of Scott Blackmon and Sukhwa Young fell at No. 3 doubles to Arvid Puranen and Albert Larregola, 8-1. Tech evened the score at 1-1 with a win at No. 1 from Marko Rajevac and David North over Stephane Rod and Alexy Sergeev, 8-4. In the finals doubles match, Jose Muguruza and Noah Tyler fell to Angel Diankov and Wilkins, 8-4 to give the Hokies the point.
Virginia Tech then pushed its lead to 3-0 when they earned singles wins at No. 2 and No. 1. At No. 2, Muguruza fell to Puranen in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3 and then at No. 1 singles North fell to Rod, 7-6, 6-2. The Jackets fought back to even the match as at No. 5 Jordan Delass defeated Sergeev, 6-4, 6-3, Rajevac held on at No. 3 singles to defeat Larregola, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, and at No. 4 singles Zachary Rath defeated Diankov, 7-5, 7-5. In the deciding match, George Gvelesiani fell to Adel Abbas in three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Sunday at 12 p.m. when they face No. 2 Virginia in Charlottesville.
