Georgia Tech Men's Tennis Continues Success at Southern Collegiate Championships

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team continued to find success at the Southern Collegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., winning five singles matches and a doubles match the second day of competition. The four-day tourney is being held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia.

The Yellow Jackets’ first win of the day came from sophomore newcomer West Nott, who advanced to the third round of the Division II Upper Bracket with an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over Wade Orr of Tennessee, who is currently ranked 86th in the nation in the ITA poll. Nott remained unbeaten as a Yellow Jacket and moved to the fourth round with a win over Thomas Knizat of Chattanooga by a solid 6-2, 6-4 score. Fellow sophomore newcomer Scott Schnugg also found the going easy in his morning match, downing Thomas Bross of Stetson in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Schnugg, who has yet to lose a set in the tournament, then defeated Elliott Elkins of South Carolina to move to the fourth round by a 6-2, 6-1 score. Nott and Schnugg will play in the fourth round at 10:30 and 11 a.m. respectively.

Junior Roger Anderson won his second-round match with Daniel Klemetz by a 6-1, 6-2 score, but fell in the third round to Bobby Reynolds in straight sets, 1-6, 4-6. Sophomore Alex Navinkov dropped his second round match to Mark Dietrich of Tennessee by a 2-6, 4-6 count and was eliminated from the tourney. Junior Joao Menano also was unable to advance in the morning match as he fell to Tennessee’s Simon Rae in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 2-6.

In consolation play, junior David Wright lost his afternoon match to Lee Walker of Memphis in a tight three-set match that ended in a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 4-10 score. Also in the consoles, freshman Trevor Wilson fell to Hugh Clarssen of Troy State, 3-6, 6-3, 6-10.

In doubles play, the Yellow Jackets finished 1-1 on the day, as the team of Fabio Campos and Menano remained unbeaten and moved to the fourth round of the Division II doubles bracket with an 8-5 win over Brown and Smith of Vanderbilt. Tech’s other doubles tandem of Stephen Moros and Schnugg lost their third-round match to Sanabria and Strangberg of Central Florida by a score of 6-8.
