Georgia Tech Men's Tennis Advances in ACC Tournament; Defeats Maryland 4-0

April 21, 2005

Freshman Sukhwa Young clinched the final point for the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team with a win at No. 4 singles over David Reichsfeld, 6-3, 6-3 to help the Yellow Jackets to a 4-0 victory over Maryland in the first round of the ACC Tournament. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 14-8 on the season while the Terrapins fall to 8-12.

“This was a good start to the ACC Tournament for us,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “I thought that two out of our three doubles played very well today. In singles everybody came out ready to play which was good. Maryland challenged us at the start but our guys handled it well. It was great to get a feel for the courts and work some of the jitters out and we are looking forward to a great match against Florida State tomorrow.”

The Jackets took the early lead 1-0 taking the doubles point by winning at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. Tech’s Zachary Rath and Scott Blackmon grabbed their match quickly, disposing of Scott Fink and David Reichsfeld easily, 8-1. The Jackets then claimed the point as the team of No. 55 David North and Marko Rajevac broke the serve of Troy Demers and Ian Bliss late in the match to win, 8-6. The match between Jose Muguruza and Sukhwa Young against the Terp’s Michael Coleman and Josh Brauser was suspended once Tech won the point.

Tech then took a 2-0 lead as Marko Rajevac won at No. 3 singles over Scott Fink in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Not long after Jordan Delass won at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0 over Coleman before Young’s final point clinched the match for the Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action Friday at 5 p.m. when they face Florida State in the quarterfinals in the ACC Tournament, held in Cary, NC.
