Georgia Tech Men Set for ACC Indoor Championships

Feb. 21, 2007

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s track and field team will be competing at the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships this Thursday – Saturday, Feb. 22-24, on the campus of Clemson University in Clemson, S.C.

“We are excited about our trip to Clemson this weekend to compete in the ACC Indoor Championships,” said head coach Grover Hinsdale. “This team has made steady progress throughout the season thus far. I look for us to make a significant jump in the final standings from what we did last season.”

Seven athletes on the men’s team are currently ranked in the top five in the ACC rankings. Junior Jerome Miller is ranked first in the high jump with his school- and personal-best NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 7 feet, 2 ½ inches that he achieved at the Clemson Opener. Sophomore Juan Cave has the conferences third-best mark with a height of 6 feet, 11 ¾ inches. The two Jackets will be in action on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Sophomore Steve Marcelle sits in third place in the shot put with a personal- and school-best NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 59 feet, 3 inches. Marcelle will be in action on Saturday morning beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Junior Derek Hoye is ranked second in the ACC in the 800-meter dash with a personal-best time of 1:50.17, which he set at the Meyo Invitational. Hoye will get his chance to score at the meet on Friday at 4:20 p.m.

Senior James Lemons II is ranked in the top five in two events including third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump. Lemons and freshman Alphonso Jordan, who is ranked fourth in the triple jump and ninth in the long jump, will get their first taste of the competition beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. Sophomore Nigel Orr, who is ranked sixth in the long jump and eighth in the triple jump, will not attend the championship meet due to an injury.

“We will miss having Nigel Orr with us but other than him I think we are healthy and ready to go,” said Hinsdale.

The ACC Indoor Championship begins on Thursday at 1:20 p.m., as the men compete in the Heptathlon. For updated information and results of the 2007 ACC Indoor Championship visit the official Georgia Tech website (www.ramblinwreck.com).
