Georgia Tech Heads to the ACC Cross Country Championship

Oct. 28, 2004

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech heads to College Park, Md. to compete in the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. Seniors Kyle Rabbitt and Neil McDonagh lead the men’s team in their final ACC meet, while sophomores Ann Armsby and Mary Chind power the women’s team. The women’s six-kilometer race begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, with the men’s 8K to follow at 11.

“We’re always excited about competing in the ACC Cross Country Championships,” head coach Alan Drosky commented. “It’s a very intense competition and one we’ve been preparing for all season long.”

The Yellow Jacket men are looking to improve upon last year’s sixth place performance. Rabbitt was Tech’s top finisher in 2003 coming just short of all-conference honors with his eleventh place finish.

“It was frustrating last year,” Rabbitt said. “I really wanted to be all-ACC and to come that close and not get it was disappointing. But I have one more to go and I am going to go all out on this one. It’s all or nothing this year.”

Rabbitt has competed in two events this year for the Rambling Wreck. He captured top honors for the Jackets in the Chile Pepper Invitational and was second on the team to McDonagh at the Notre Dame Invitational.

McDonagh had a strong showing during the season finishing as Tech top runner in Notre Dame Invitational and finished 23rd at the Georgia State Invite. McDonagh did not run in the Chile Pepper Invitational due to injury.

“The men’s team has a good mix of some veteran upperclassmen along with some younger kids who will experience an ACC Championships for the first time,” stated Drosky. “Kyle Rabbitt has been coming along great over the last month and Neil McDonagh, who sat out our last meet with a foot injury, is back and will compete hard.”

In the women’s race, the Tech cross country team is lead by a pair of sophomores. Ann Armsby and Mary Chind have been the one-two punch for the Yellow Jackets this season. The duo has finished first and second for Tech in every race they have competed in this year. The pair will try to lead a young and inexperienced Georgia Tech team who finished eighth at the ACC Championships last year.

“The women’s team is very young and led by two sophomores, Ann Armsby and Mary Chind,” Drosky said. “They’ve been improving week by week and this meet will be an excellent opportunity.”

Results from the ACC Championships will be posted on www.ramblinwreck.com at the conclusion of both races.
