Georgia Tech-Georgia Battle to Tie in Women's Dual Meet

ATLANTA- The Georgia Tech-Georgia dual meet was contested on Saturday afternoon at the Griffin Track. In the women’s dual, 18 total events were unable to decide it, as the meet ended in a 96-96 draw. For the men, Georgia earned a 123-63 win over the Yellow Jackets.

“We didn’t line up to compete today with the intention of tying, but I’m very proud,” said women’s coach Alan Drosky. “The real winner today was track & field, as we saw a great, old fashioned, college dual meet between two great rivals,”

“I just wish we could’ve won one more point.”

The women’s meet went back and forth for the majority of the afternoon, but ultimately came down to the triple jump and the 4×400 relay, two events Tech captured to tie the meet.

In the triple jump, Jhanelle McLeod set a new career outdoor best with a mark of 40′ 6″ to win. In the final event of the afternoon, the Georgia Tech 4×400 team of Jasmine Isley, Jenae Anderson, Kellie Christian and Tiffany Grant crossed the finish line in 3:49.78 to pick up the victory and ultimately tie the dual.

Victories we recorded in several events on the afternoon for the Jacket women, starting off in the long jump, as McLeod took the event after posting a mark of 18′ 2″. In the first track event of the afternoon, the Tech 4×100 relay squad beat out Georgia’s squad crossing the finish line in 45.68.

The next win for Tech came in the women’s shot put, as Bailey Wagner dominated her Georgia competitor with a mark of 46′ 7″. Wagner also captured the discus with a mark of 154′ 10″.

The next two track events saw a Georgia Tech runner win, as Melanie Akwule captured the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.96 and Grant won the 400 meters with a mark of 55.09.

Jade Sims picked up another win for Tech in the 800-meter run, edging out teammate Annie Martin with a time of 2:14.08. In the 400 meter hurdles, Isley crossed the finish line in 59.72 to capture the event and give the women’s team one of its last wins of the day.

Despite losing to the Bulldogs, the Georgia Tech men’s team registered some impressive performances on the day in several events.

In the long jump, Stephen Hill was victorious with a mark of 24′ 7″, while in the shot put, senior Steve Marcelle took top honors after a throw of 59′ 8″. He also won the discus after posting a mark of 178′ 1″

The last victory of the afternoon for the Tech men came in the 400 meters, as Hunter Clasen had an impressive, come-from-behind win with after crossing the finish line in 48.71.

Meanwhile, senior Alphonso Jordan was edged for wins in the three events he competed in on the afternoon. Jordan lost out on the top spot in the 110 meter hurdles by five tenths of a second (with a time of 14.27), while in the triple jump Jordan’s mark of 49′ 5″ was not enough to earn a victory. Jordan also lost out to Hill in the long jump with a 23′ 8¾” effort.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on March 26th – 27th when they host the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Griffin Track. Action gets underway on Friday, the 26th with the hammer throw at 6 p.m.
