THE FLATS – After helping lead Georgia Tech football to a convincing 38-7 victory over Vanderbilt on Saturday, senior center Freddie Burden and freshman B-back Dedrick Mills were named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Offensive Lineman of the Week and co-Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
Burden anchored an offensive front that paved the way for Georgia Tech (3-0) to record a season-high 511 yards of offense (289 rushing, 222 passing) in the romp over Vanderbilt. The 6-4, 299-pounder recorded a team-best eight defenders taken to the ground in only three quarters of work.
Mills ran for 58 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s rout. With scoring runs of 15, four and five yards, the 5-10, 217-pounder became the first true freshman to score three touchdowns in a game in head coach Paul Johnson’s nine seasons at the helm of the Yellow Jackets.
Burden and Mills are the first Yellow Jackets to earn weekly honors from the ACC this season.
Georgia Tech puts its undefeated record on the line on Thursday night when it hosts unbeaten No. 5/3 Clemson (3-0) at Bobby Dodd Stadium. A limited number of tickets for the nationally televised 7:30 p.m. affair are still available and can be purchased online at togetherweswarm.com.
The Yellow Jackets are 7-2 at home against nationally ranked teams under Johnson while Clemson rides a 17-game regular-season winning streak into Thursday’s contest. Georgia Tech has won five-straight over the Tigers at Bobby Dodd Stadium dating back to 2005.
In other news announced by the ACC on Monday, Georgia Tech’s Oct. 1 home game versus No. 15/19 Miami (Fla.) will kick off at noon and be televised live on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.
