Georgia Tech Finishes Fourth and 16th at NCAA South Regionals

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.
– The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams finished fourth and 16th, respectively, at the 2012 NCAA South Region Championships on Friday morning at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Florida State and Georgia men took the top two slots in the race to secure spots in the 2012 NCAA Championships on Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky. Jakub Zivec of Florida State won the race with a time of 30:23.

The Georgia Tech men finished fourth out of 26 teams with 212 points.

Shawn Roberts led the Yellow Jacket pack with a 34th place finish out of 177 runners in a career-best 10K time of 31:43. Obiandu Igwe crossed the line 10 seconds later for 38th place (career-best – 31:53). Alec Clifford (season-best 32:00, 45th), Brandon Lasater (32:03, 47th) and Jeremy Greenwald (32:10, 53rd) rounded out the top finishers for the Yellow Jackets.

Florida State and Vanderbilt claimed the top two spots in the women’s race with 24 and 112 points, respectively, to advance to the 2012 NCAA Championships. FSU swept the top three spots in the race with Violah Lagat taking home the win (20:06).

The Yellow Jacket women finished 16th with a total of 416 points.

Katie Townsend continued to excel on the course, improving her 6K time from a week ago to a career-best 21:37. The sophomore led Tech, as she has done all season, with a 68th-place finish out of 205 runners.

Mary Kate DuBard crossed the line second for Tech with a time of 21:45. She was followed by Kaylee Isaacs (season-best, 21:53 – 84th), Rachel Hammond (career-best, 21:57 – 90th) and Caroline Kissel (season-best, 22:20 – 112th) to round out Tech’s top five.
