THE FLATS – The #32-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (11-7, 8-4 ACC) won its third-straight match this afternoon, defeating #68-ranked Syracuse, 7-0 at the Ken Byers Tennis Center.
“I think we came out today and played doubles really well,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “We didn’t do that on Friday but we did a good job of playing doubles today. They have some really good players on their team but we were able to play competitively on each of the courts in order to get a win against a really solid team. We are really happy. We have a tough weekend coming up with #1 Duke and #3 North Carolina. It’s going to be a good week next week so we are looking forward to it.”
The Yellow Jackets rolled to two doubles wins to clinch the doubles point to open up the match. On court two, the duo of sophomore Natasha Prokhnevska and senior Muriel Wacker quickly defeated Amada Rogers and Komel Safdar, 8-1. The #5-ranked doubles duo of Megan Kurey and Kendal Woodard also won their match by a score of 8-1, taking down Maddie Kobelt and Valeria Salazar.
Wacker extended her singles winning streak to six-straight wins after a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Maria Avgerinos on court five. On court six, freshman Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer also tacked on another win to her own singles winning streak, defeating Safdar, 6-2,6-2. Anton-Ohlmeyer has won four-straight matches on court six.
Shortly after Anton-Ohlmeyer’s win, Prokhnevska clinched the match for the Jackets. The sophomore took down Rhiann Newborn in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-4.
On court one, Woodard defeated Kobelt, 6-2, in set one, before falling to her opponent, 6-3, in the second set. During the tiebreaker, Woodard took a 7-4 lead before Kobelt came back to tie it 8-8. Woodard then rattled off the next two points to win the tiebreaker, 10-8, and put the Jackets up 5-0.
Kurey stayed undefeated on court two at 3-0 after battling out with Rogers to a 6-4, 6-4 win. McAdoo secured Tech’s second-straight 7-0 win with an 6-2, 7-5 victory against Salazar at the number four spot.
The Yellow Jackets wrap up their final regular season weekend at home when they host #3 North Carolina on April 17 at 3 p.m. and #1 Duke on April 19 at noon. Senior Muriel Wacker will be honored on Senior Day which will take place prior to the Duke match.
