Georgia Tech Cross Country Captures Both Men's and Women's Titles at Georgia Intercollegiate Championships

Oct. 6, 2001

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams both posted victories in the Division I portion of the Georgia Intercollegiate Championships Saturday at Georgia State’s Panthersville course. The wins continued a string of success in the event by both squads.

The men’s team posted the top three Division I runners. Joey Zins placed first in a time of 25:55.6, followed by Phillip Gable (26:09) and Matt O’Brien (26:21). Also scoring for the Yellow Jackets were Jeffrey Boyd, who placed fifth among Division I competitors, and Joe Poliseo, who finished ninth. Tech posted just 20 points to outdistance Georgia State and Mercer.

With the win, Tech’s men have captured the team title in every year they have participated in the event since 1990. The squad did not compete in ’95.

On the women’s side, Yellow Jacket runners captured the first five places among Division I competitors. Amy Edwards led the way, finishing first in a time of 18:46. She was followed Katie deVaux (18:51), Neta Ezer (18:53), Christine Noelke (19:08) and Kirsten Shell (19:46). Georgia Tech scored the minimum of 15 points to defeat Mercer.

The Tech women have won each Division I team title since 1996.

Both squads return to action Oct. 13 at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
