Oct. 6, 2007

ATLANTA – Guillermo Gomez won two hard fought singles matches to reach the finals of the “A” bracket to lead the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team on the second day of Georgia Tech Fall Tournament at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Gomez, a freshman from Alicante, Spain, defeated Drake Bernstein of Georgia, 6-0, 6-7 (7), 6-2, in a tough quarterfinal match up on Saturday. In his next match, Gomez earned a 7-5, 6-4, straight-set victory over Nick Podkrajsek of Georgia State. He will face Jamie Hunt of Georgia in the finals on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

“Guillermo (Gomez) played two really good matches today,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “I am really proud at the way he has played. He has faced some tough competition and has shown a lot of confidence.”

Senior George Gvelesiani overcame his first round loss on Friday to reach the “B” singles bracket consolation finals. Gvelesiani came from behind to beat Alex Lambropoulos of Kentucky, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6, in his quarterfinal match. The Norcross, Ga. native then picked up a 7-6 (5), 7-5 win over Borja Malet of Georgia Southern. Gvelesiani will face Nick Maurillo of Auburn at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

In doubles play, Miguel Muguruza and Eliot Potvin teamed for an 8-3, second-round win over Alex Petropoulos and Alexey Tsyrenov of Auburn. On the other side of the bracket, Scott Blackmon and Ryan Smith also earned a victory, defeating Drake Bernstein and Joshua Varela, 8-3. The two Jackets doubles teams will begin semifinal action at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning.

“The doubles teams were really impressive today,” Thorne added. “They have shown some really good things this weekend. We have not seen this yet and I am excited that things are coming together.”
