Freeman on Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

July 18, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech senior defensive end KeShun Freeman is one of 108 student-athletes on the official watch list for the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy, the Fort Walton Beach (Fla.) All Sports Association announced on Tuesday.

The Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” is awarded annually to the NCAA Division I FBS student-athlete that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Freeman was selected as a member of the 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team in recognition of his involvement in several community service projects in Atlanta and beyond. His efforts include serving as an active volunteer for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where he takes part in the For the Kids Dance Marathon and creates and delivers valentines for hospitalized children.

His other service initiatives have included serving as a volunteer counselor at Atlanta’s Chick-Fil-A Youth Football Camp, acting as a Girls on the Run race volunteer, organizing fellow student-athletes to participate in the opening ceremony of the Georgia Special Olympics Winter Games, traveling with teammates to the Dominican Republic on behalf of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to build houses for local families and participating in various initiatives in local schools.

Freeman’s service to the community and desire to help children is inspired by his brother, Landon, whose battle with health issues was chronicled by ESPN in 2015. Landon’s inspiration has also led KeShun, who will graduate in December with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, to aspire for a career in pediatric anesthesiology after his football-playing days are over.

On the field, Freeman has started 37-consecutive games at defensive end for Georgia Tech and has recorded seven sacks, 17.5 tackles for loss and forced two fumbles over the course of his three-year career.

Semifinalists for the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy will be named on Nov. 2 and finalists will be unveiled on Nov. 22. The winner will be announced on Dec. 5 at the National Football Foundation press conference in New York and the award will be presented at the All Sports Association Awards Banquet on Feb. 16, 2018 in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Freeman and the Yellow Jackets open the 2017 campaign on Monday, Sept. 4 versus Tennessee in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at brand-new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta. Season tickets, which include a seat for the highly anticipated opener against Tennessee at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and Flex Packs, which allow fans to purchase tickets for any three, four, five or six games at Bobby Dodd Stadium – including the Nov. 25 showdown versus archrival Georgia – are on sale now.
