TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – FKristi Miller has advanced to the semifinals of both the singles and doubles draws at the 2006 Wilson/ITA South Regional, which is being held at the Alabama Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Alabama, and concludes play on Sunday with the semifinals and finals.
Teaming with Miller in the doubles semifinal is junior Alison Silverio, while rookie Kirsten Flower has advanced to the semis in the singles bracket. Amanda McDowell will also be competing Sunday, as she has advanced to the semifinals of the consolation singles bracket.
Miller recorded a pair of straight-set victories on Saturday to advance to the 9 a.m. semifinal match against Georgia’s Natalie Frazier, the No. 4 seed in the singles tournament. The Yellow Jacket All-American defeated Georgia’s Darya Ivanov, 6-3, 7-5 before stopping the No. 6 seed, Adrianna Solarova of South Alabama, 6-3, 7-5, in the quarterfinals.
Earlier in the day, she and Silverio faced Ivanov and her teammate Monika Dancevic, dropping the Georgia duo, 8-6, to set up a 12 noon semifinal match against fourth-seeded Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak of Florida.
Silverio earned a win in her third round singles match against Georgia State’s Dariana Kozmina, 7-5, 6-7, 6-1, but dropped her quarterfinal vs. Georgia’s Shadisha Robinson, 6-4, 6-4.
Flower continued to show grit on the court Saturday, battling for a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3) victory over Florida State’s Ania Rynarzewska in the third round before defeating 64th-ranked Carolin Walter of Florida State, the No. 10 seed in the tournament, 7-6 (4), 6-4. She will next face third-seeded Shadisha Robinson at 9 a.m. Sunday in the semifinals.
Also earning victories in the third round of singles were rookie Amanda Craddock, who stopped Florida’s Benik, the No. 13 singles seed, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-0, and McDowell, who downed Mississippi State’s Martina Banikova, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 7-5, and Georgia’s Adrienne Elsberry, 6-2, 6-2.
Also competing for the Yellow Jackets on Saturday were senior Tarryn Rudman, junior Whitney McCray and sophomore Christy Striplin, who all suffered third-round losses to seeded singles players. Rudman dropped a 6-2, 6-4 match to 72nd-ranked Robinson of Georgia, and McCray fell by the same score to 10th-seeded and 64th-ranked Carolin Walter of Florida State. Striplin’s run in the Regional was stopped by South Alabama’s 41st-ranked Adriana Solarova, the tournament’s No. 6 seed.
