THE FLATS – Georgia Tech seniors Alex Grady (men’s cross country/track and field), Angelica Henderson (women’s track and field), Michael Kay (men’s tennis) and Kel Johnson (baseball) are among the 52 Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes selected as 2018 Weaver-James-Corrigan Award recipients. The Weaver-James-Corrigan awards are presented to ACC student-athletes that have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sports while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
Grady, Henderson and Kay have been named recipients of the ACC’s Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarships, with each receiving $5,000 towards their graduate educations.
Johnson is one of nine recipients of the Weaver-James-Corrigan honorary award, which recognizes student-athletes who plan to pursue professional careers in their respective sports instead of enrolling in graduate school.
Georgia Tech’s four ACC postgraduate scholars will be honored at the annual Cone Health ACC Postgraduate Luncheon, hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club and presented by ESPN, on April 11 at the Sheraton Four Seasons Hotel and Imperial Ballroom in Greensboro, N.C.
2018 GEORGIA TECH WEAVER-JAMES-CORRIGAN AWARD RECIPIENTS
Alex Grady (Men’s Cross Country/Track and Field, Covington, Ga./Newton)
A four-year member of the track and field and cross country team, Grady has long been a standout of the distance team at Georgia Tech. Last season was a banner year for Grady, as he turned in career performances in the mile, the 3000m run, the 1500m run and the 3000m steeplechase, all en route to qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminaries. Off the field, he’s also the recipient of the 2015 CoSIDA Haier Achievement Award for community service before being named the 2017 Peach of an Athlete Amateur Role Model. Grady graduates in May with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
Angelica Henderson (Women’s Track and Field, Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee)
A four-year member of the track and field team, Henderson has been the stalwart runner in the 400 meters and member of the 4×400 relay. She currently holds the fastest 400m time on the roster after running a 54.70 at the Tom Jones Memorial last spring. At the 2018 ACC Indoor Championships, Henderson helped Georgia Tech’s distance medley relay team to the third-fastest time in program history, garnering an eighth-place finish in the event. In addition to more than 30 top-10 finishes for her career, she will also graduate this May with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
Michael Kay (Men’s Tennis, Alpharetta, Ga./Rivers Academy)
Closing in on 60 career singles victories, tops among all active Yellow Jackets, Kay has held down a middle singles position and been a formidable doubles partner for four years. As a sophomore in 2015-16, Kay teamed up with his brother, Casey, for 19 doubles wins and a national ranking as high as No. 24, in addition to a career-best 23 singles victories that year. Teaming up with Carlos Divar this season, Kay has already jumped out to a 4-1 record as he vies for a strong career finish. The Alpharetta native will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in IT management and a certificate in finance.
Kel Johnson (Baseball, Palmetto, Ga./Home-schooled)
A three-time all-ACC academic team selection (2015, 2016, 2017) and a three-time member of the ACC academic honor roll (2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17), Johnson has also earned first-team all-ACC honors (2016), all-ACC freshman team recognition (2015) and freshman all-America plaudits (2015) during the course of his career at Georgia Tech. He has played in over 155 games for the Yellow Jackets and has recorded 182 hits, 32 home runs, 36 doubles, three triples, 132 RBIs and scored 106 runs. With his 32 career home runs, he sits just outside of Georgia Tech’s top-20 career home run hitters, while his three home runs versus Georgia Southern back on Feb. 21, 2017 is tied for the most home runs by a Jacket in a single game in the program’s history. An active member in the community, Johnson has worked numerous baseball camps and has been a part of the Michael Isenhour Toy Drive each year that he has been on The Flats. A biology major, Johnson intends to go to dental school after the conclusion of his baseball career.
