Four Georgia Tech Programs Receive APR Public Recognition

April 13, 2016

THE FLATS – Four Georgia Tech teams were publicly honored Wednesday by the NCAA for being among the top 10 percent in Academic Progress Rates (APR). The four teams – football, golf, men’s swimming & diving and volleyball – are the second-most honorees for Georgia Tech and the most since 2013.

Bruce Heppler’s golf program has received an APR Public Recognition Award every year since the APR’s inception in 2006. Georgia Tech is one of only three ACC golf programs to receive an APR award every year.

Courtney Shealy Hart’s men’s swimming & diving program was recognized for the third straight year (third time overall), while football (first time since 2013 and third time overall under Paul Johnson) and volleyball (first time since 2009 and first time under Michelle Collier) were honored for the third time.

Georgia Tech has received 31 public APR awards in 10 sports since the APR was introduced 11 years ago — baseball (2008, 2009), men’s cross country (2009, 2010), women’s cross country (2009, 2010, 2011), football (2012, 2013, 2015), golf (2005-2015), softball (2010), men’s swimming & diving (2013, 2014, 2015), women’s swimming & diving (2005), men’s tennis (2011), women’s tennis (2013), and volleyball (2008, 2009, 2015).

All Division I teams’ APR scores will be released April 20. All teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.

The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.

The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. The most recent APR scores are based on the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. This year marks the 12th year of APR data for most teams.
