Ford, Lapsley, Payne and Stojanovska Named Wendy's Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

ATLANTA – Track standouts Brian Ford and Andriane Lapsley, baseball rookie Danny Payne and swimming star Vesna Stojanovska were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, February 21, 2005.

Ford, a senior from Ashland, Va., posted a runner up finish in the 400 meters and ran a personal best time of 21.60 in the 200 meters to finish third earning all-ACC honors in both events. He helped the men’s team to a fifth place finish.

Lapsley, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, earned all-ACC honors in two events to help lead the women’s team to a third place finish at the ACC Championships. Lapsley captured the title in the 60-meter dash while finishing second in the 200-meter dash. Lapsley also scored points for the Jackets with a sixth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles.

Payne, a freshman from Woodstock, Ga., hit .538 to lead Tech to a three game sweep of Iona over the weekend. The freshman had seven hits in 13 at bats, including a home run and two doubles, scored seven runs, had six RBI, and added a stolen base. He posted a .600 on base percentage and a .923 slugging percentage. After going 1-for-6 in the series-opening win on Friday, Payne went 6-for-7 with two walks in Tech’s doubleheader sweep on Saturday. Payne scored six runs and drove in six runs in the doubleheader, hitting a home run and two doubles.

Stojanovska, a sophomore from Skopje, Macedonia, became the first Tech women’s swimmer to win an ACC title with a school record NCAA “B” cut time of 1:59.27 in the 200-yard butterfly. In addition, Stojanovska also earned all-ACC honors with a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, setting a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle with a NCAA “B” cut time of 1:47.67. Stojanovska helped the team to a sixth place finish at the ACC Championships, the best finish in school history. She was also a part of the 800-yard freestyle relay team that broke a school record with an NCAA “B” cut time of 7:24.06. The sophomore was also a member of the 400-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley teams that set school records.
