ATLANTA (Oct. 23) – Jason Floyd and Darryl LaBarrie led the men’s team with 13 points each, while Niesha Butler, Milli Martinez and Candice McCallum scored eight points each for the women’s squad at Georgia Tech basketball’s HoopFest before 2,000 fans at Alexander Memorial Coliseum at McDonald’s Center.
The men’s and women’s teams each scrimmaged for 20 minutes as Tech fans got their first look at the 1999-2000 Yellow Jackets.
In the mens scrimmage, Floyd, a swingman senior from Hampton, Ga., paced the White Team to a 55-49 victory. Guard Shaun Fein (Centerville, Mass.), a transfer from Stonehill College who is expected to challenge for a starting berth, contributed 10 points for the White Team, while center Alvin Jones (Lakeland, Fla.) scored 10 and forward Jason Collier (Springfield, Ohio) added nine points. LaBarrie (Decatur, Ga.) and freshman Clarence Moore (Norco, La.), who had nine points, led the Blue Team.
In the women’s scrimmage, Martinez, a sophomore guard from Imlay City, Mich., and McCallum, a junior post player from Barnegat, N.J., led the White Team to a 31-29 win over the Gold Team. Butler, the preseason all-Atlantic Coast Conference sophomore, led the Gold Team along with freshman guard Amy Lingenfelder (Fairfax, Va.), who scored nine points on three three-pointers.
The Tech men get their first taste of outside competition with an exhibition game against Athletes in Action on Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Alexander Memorial Coliseum at McDonald’s Center, while the women host an exhibition against Basketball Travelers on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.
