ORLANDO, Fla. – The fourth-seeded Florida State Seminoles downed the fifth-seeded Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4-2 in the first quarterfinal match of the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the Lake Cane Tennis Center Friday morning.
The Seminoles swept the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to earn the first point of the day. In singles action, Tech sophomore Jaime Wong defeated FSU’s Jessica Balbuena, 7-6 (6), 6-4, at No. 3 and junior Laura Ozolins beat Marina Raic, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, at No. 6. But Florida State claimed the victory with wins at No. 1 by Alida Gallovits, No. 2 by Samantha Schoeffel and No. 4 by Nanette Duxin, who clinched the match for the ‘Noles.
The Yellow Jackets fell to 11-11 while FSU improved its record to 14-9. The Seminoles will face the top-seeded Duke Blue Devils on Saturday, April 21, at 10:00 a.m.
