SUMTER, S.C. – Freshmen Victoria Flores and Ida Jarlskog each secured spots in the main draw at the Palmetto Pink Open on Tuesday, winning their third round qualifying matches.
The main draw features 32 players, including eight qualifiers. The championship match will take place on Sunday.
First on the court this morning, Flores faced off against Kennedy Shaffer, a senior All-America at Georgia. After gaining the lead securing the first set, 6-4, Flores fought off an early second set deficit. Trailing 2-4, the Yellow Jacket tied the set at 4-4. With Shaffer serving at 4-4, Flores looked to easily go up a break, holding the advantage with triple-break point. Flores secured the break after fighting off a short rally from Shaffer to go up 5-4 in the set with a chance to serve out the match. Shaffer fought off one match point from Flores in the next game, but Flores held on for the 6-4 second set victory and a spot in the main draw.
With another main draw spot on the line, two Yellow Jackets battled each other for the coveted spot. Jarlskog and senior Paige Hourigan met in the final round of qualifying action and Jarlskog took the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
