ATLANTA – Brandy Depland, Chaunte Howard, Brendon Mahoney, Montrell Person and Amandi Rhett will all represent Georgia Tech at the U.S. Olympic Trials, July 9-18, in Sacramento, Calif. The top three finishers, with Olympic qualifying standards, will represent Team USA in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
“We’re excited to have student-athletes qualify for such a great track meet,” said men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale. “Historically this has been a great track meet every four years. We’ve had some very good fortune three of the last four years. Georgia Tech has been present and has represented the U.S. at the Olympic games and several have medaled. They do a great job running this event and we anticipate having another successful meet for Tech athletes.”
“The U.S. Olympic Trials for Track & Field is one of the biggest stages for our sport, so it’s great to have three of our women representing Georgia Tech there,” said women’s head coach Alan Drosky. “A fourth individual who qualified for the Trials is Ashlee Kidd, however she won’t be competing as she is in Italy representing the U.S. in the World Junior Championships. We look forward to some great competition and as always we look to be competing at our best. Of particular note, Chaunte Howard is coming off a tremendous 6’6″ school record performance and has some great momentum going into this meet.”
Joining the current Tech track athletes at the trials will be former Tech track standouts David Krummenacker (1994, 1996-98) and Angelo Taylor (1997-98). Krummenacker holds the top time in the men’s 800 meters (1:44.30) in the U.S. and was a two-time NCAA national champion for the Yellow Jackets. Taylor attained Gold in Sydney in the men’s 400-meter hurdles at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Both will compete on Friday night, Taylor at 9:30 p.m. and Krummenacker at 10:20 p.m. ET.
Depland will compete in the women’s triple jump for the Jackets, qualifying with a mark of 43’1.75″ at the outdoor ACC Championships. The Katy. Texas, native will compete in the qualifying round on Friday, July 9th, at 9:25 p.m. ET.
Howard posted a Tech record mark of 6’6″ in the women’s high jump at the 2004 Pre-trials Sprint and Power meet at BYU in Provo, Utah, on June 26. The Riverside, Calif., native currently is tied with Tisha Waller for the top mark in the U.S. and will compete on Saturday, July 10th, at 8 p.m. ET.
Mahoney ended his senior season by tallying All-America honors in the 1500 meters for the men’s track and field team. The Cumming, Ga., native will run the 1500 at the Trials, competing in the quarterfinal round at 11 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 15th.
Person qualified for the trials for Tech in the men’s 110-meter high hurdles and will compete in the qualifying round on Saturday, July 17th, at 3:35 p.m. ET. Person garnered All-America honors for the first time in his career at the outdoor NCAA meet in the 110m hurdles.
Rhett earned All-America honors in the 100, 200 and 4×100 relay events and will compete in the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Rhett will run in the qualifying round of the 100 on Friday, July 9th, at 8:30 p.m. ET and in the quarterfinal round of the 200 on Friday, July 16th, at 9:10 p.m. ET.
