CLEMSON, S.C. – The Georgia Tech track & field teams had a successful first night of competition at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C. on Friday night. In all, five Yellow Jacket athletes won events on the night.
Action kicked off on the night with the women’s 60-meter dash, which saw Georgia Tech junior Jenae Anderson finished third overall, crossing the finish line in a time of 7.54. Next up in the women’s 60-meter hurdles, the Yellow Jackets earned their first win of the night, as Melanie Akwule captured the event, finishing in a time of 8.59. Teammate Jasmine Isley finished sixth in the finals of the same event with a time of 8.79.
In the first men’s event of the evening for the men’s squad, senior Alphonso Jordan placed seventh in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.45. In the next event of note for the men on the night, junior Mark Mendrek-Laske finished second in the men’s one mile run with time of 4:16.35.
The Yellow Jackets made a clean sweep of both the women’s and men’s 1000-meter dash, as sophomore Annie Martin captured the women’s side of the event after finishing with a time of 2:55.81, while Billy Mateker won the men’s portion of the event after finishing in 2:30.40.
In the women’s 500-meter dash, junior Amanda Montgomery finished third overall with a time of 1:18.79, while her teammate Jade Sims finished right behind in fourth place after crossing the finish line in 1:19.15. In the next event of note for the women, Tiffany Grant captured the fourth win of the night for Tech with a victory in the 300-meter dash in a personal best time of 39.31.
Next in the men’s 5000-meter run, Nathan Tew was Georgia Tech’s top finisher in fifth palce after finishing with a time of 15:13.46. Meanwhile, in the women’s long jump, sophomore Jhanelle McLeod finished second overall after posting a mark of 19′ 1″ in the finals of the event. In the men’s portion of the long jump, Jordan posted a mark of 23′ 3¾” to finish third overall.
In the women’s weight throw, Bailey Wagner finished third overall with a mark of 53′ 3″ to place third overall. In the men’s side f the same event, Tech’s Duncan Thompson also placed third with a mark of 58′ 10″.
In the last event of note on the night for the Yellow Jackets, sophomore Terri Ann Grant earned the fifth and final win on the night for Tech in the women’s high jump with a mark of 6′ 10″.
