Five Minutes with Mario West

Feb. 17, 2006

My teammates call me: “Rio.”

Favorite food: “Any type of breakfast food such as bacon, eggs, pancakes, sausage, and some orange juice.”

Latest music CD I bought: “Laponne, which is my cousin’s rap group”

Favorite musical artist: “Tupac. I’ve always liked his music and what he talks about in his songs.”

Last movie I rented or watched in the theater: “Get Rich or Die Tryin’, which is based on the story of 50 Cent.”

Favorite TV show: “Good Times is one of my favorite shows.”

Favorite pro sports team: “I like watching the Miami Heat play, especially because of the Shaquille O’Neal and Dwayne Wade combination. Any guard that’s paired up with Shaq is going to be fun to watch.”

Person I would most like to meet (dead or alive): “Martin Luther King, Jr. There was so much going on during that time and he saw the need for a change. I’d like to be able to look into his mind and see what he was thinking when he started the civil rights movement.”

Team I would like to add to the schedule: “Kentucky. They always have a pretty good team and I think it’d be interesting to play them.”

My favorite arena other than the Thrillerdome: “I enjoy playing at North Carolina. I watched so many legends like Michael Jordan play there while I was growing up so it’s fun to be able to play on the same floor as them.”

Most memorable moment in basketball: “Going to the Final Four in 2004 was definitely my most memorable moment.”

Best non-athletic talent: “I’m a pretty good cook. I don’t have any favorite dishes that I make but I can cook just about anything.”

Who had the greatest influence on your athletic career? “My parents. They’ve both been very supportive of me playing sports and my entire family in general is made up of athletes so I get a lot of support from everyone.”

Athlete you most admire: “My dad. He was a football player and I think that’s where I get my aggressiveness from when it comes to playing sports. I just admire him a lot as an athlete and also as a man.”

If there was another sport at Tech you could play, what would it be? “It would have to be football and I’d play wide receiver.”

If you had to exchange wardrobes with someone on the team, whose clothes would you want?Keith Jones. He’s not a flashy dresser but he keeps it straight when it comes to what he wears.”

If you could have season tickets for any team, sitting in any place in the stadium, which team would it be and where would you sit? “The Los Angeles Lakers. It seems like all the stars are always at a Lakers game on any given night and most of them sit on the floor just to watch Kobe Bryant play. It seems a like a fun atmosphere to be in.”

If you were forced to give up all of your possessions but one, what would it be? “I would keep my pictures so I could have the memories of my friends and family.”
