GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s top-ranked Irina Falconi has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after leading the 10th-ranked Yellow Jackets past two fellow ranked teams in the opening rounds of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
“Irina has gotten off to a very solid start this season in singles and doubles,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “She brings a positive attitude and great energy to practice and matches.”
Against 29th-ranked Arizona State, Falconi, upended No. 58 Kelcy McKenna, 6-1, 6-4. She then came back the next day to finish off Megan Broderick of 34th-ranked Kentucky, 6-2, 6-2. The sophomore also went 2-0 in doubles with teammate Sasha Krupina. The tandem earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles against Arizona State’s team and had an 8-1 victory of the top Kentucky doubles team. Falconi’s singles win and the doubles point she helped clinch in the Arizona State match spelled the difference in a 4-2 Tech win. The Yellow Jackets also defeated Kentucky by a 4-2 score.
Falconi, a sophomore from Jupiter, Fla., has not dropped a set in her first four singles matches of the season. This is her third ACC Player of the Week honor in her career.
