Falconi Drops Opening Round Match at US Open

Aug. 25, 2009

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Georgia Tech sophomore Irina Falconi dropped her opening round qualifying match in straight sets to Lauren Embree Tuesday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Falconi, a 2009 All-American, lost the match 6-4, 6-1 to the University of Florida freshman. With the match tied at 4-4 in the first set, Embree was able to break Falconi’s serve and then hold for the set. The second set opened with both players holding serve but Embree would take the third game and not look back.

Falconi joins Amanda McDowell (2008) and Kristi Miller (2005) as the only Yellow Jackets to participate in the U.S. Open.

The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will open its 2009 fall season at home when they host the Georgia Tech Invitational Friday-Sunday, September 18-20.
