FLUSHING, N.Y. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis junior Christopher Eubanks rolls on to the second round at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday afternoon with a 7-5, 6-7 (8), 6-2 win over Texas’ Yuya Ito.
Eubanks came out to a strong start, taking a 4-1 lead in the first set. The freshman from Texas fought back, winning three straight games to tie the set up at four apiece. The pair traded games before Eubanks utilized his service to shut Ito out 45-0 and go up 6-5. Chris locked in and secured the first set, 7-5.
The second set was back and forth, trading games until the pair tied at 6-6. The two took the tiebreak all the way to 8-8 before Ito took two in a row to win the second set, 7-6 (8). Eubanks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third. He allowed Ito to get two games in before sealing the set, 6-2. Eubanks served up 14 aces in the match.
Eubanks will play in the second round on Friday against Ohio State’s No. 33-ranked Hugo Di Feo.
Volunteer coach Kevin King says: “Chris played a mentally strong match today. He was able to stick to what he wanted to do and keep the pressure on his opponent. That showed up in the third set when Chris was able to pull away after they split the first two sets.”
